Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer who played a crucial role in the Scientific Revolution. Often called the “father of modern science,” he made ground-breaking discoveries in astronomy, including the moons of Jupiter, the phases of Venus, and detailed observations of the Milky Way. His improvements to the telescope allowed him to challenge the geocentric model of the universe, supporting the heliocentric theory proposed by Copernicus. Galileo also made significant contributions to physics, particularly in the study of motion and gravity. His advocacy for heliocentrism led to a famous conflict with the Catholic Church, resulting in his house arrest. Despite this, his work laid the foundation for modern physics and astronomy, influencing scientists like Newton and Einstein.
